Phoebe Valdez
PSYCHOTHERAPIST IN TRAINING — SOCIAL WORK INTERN
Phoebe is a graduate student pursuing her Master’s in Social Work at Columbia University. She is originally from Houston, Texas, although she has spent the majority of her life moving from place to place across the world with her family. Growing up in a dynamic and diverse social environment, Phoebe developed an approach to life grounded in open-mindedness, curiosity, and connection. She has experienced a great deal of change and was drawn to this work out of a desire to support others through their own experiences with uncertainty and difficulty. She believes in the dignity and worth of every person and strives to help others see that in themselves.
In sessions, Phoebe acts as a guide, while recognizing collaboration as essential and believing in the power of clients as drivers of change. She tailors her work to her clients and welcomes (and enjoys!) feedback, striving to create a space together that clients feel is their own. She also understands that to allow for and effectively support people through meaningful change, working with clients to create a space that feels safe and unconditionally accepting is essential. She does not believe change and circumstances are the sole responsibility of an individual.
Phoebe integrates a systems-wide approach to therapy rooted in social justice, acknowledging the universal influence of social systems and oppressive structures at all levels of experience and interaction. She sees value in self-reflection and critical conversation, and is dedicated to continued education and curiosity. Phoebe firmly believes in approaching work from a place of curiosity, leaving judgement at the door. Through all of this, she aspires to support others in having the lives they want.
A Note From Phoebe:
It is a privilege to be invited into another person’s life to such a degree as therapists are. At its core, a therapist-client relationship should be a space where empathy, understanding, acceptance, and sincerity are guaranteed. I invite you to show up in whatever way you are each day, and I will meet you there, with unconditional positive regard. With me, you will always have a safe and loving space to be yourself and to work toward the life you hope for.
The Human Side
-
Outside of school and work, Phoebe values time with her family, calling her mom almost every day, swimming or hiking with her dad, and cuddling with her two labradoodles. With the rest of her time, Phoebe loves eating good food, practicing ballet, listening to her favorite songs and finding new ones, and watching so much TV.
